Supporting Montezuma County’s Homeless

High School Leadership Service Project 2013-2014

The 2013/14 High School Leadership team focused on the topic of supporting those who support our homeless population in Montezuma County. The group visited with The Bridge Emergency Shelter, the local homeless shelter, and asked how they could support the shelter’s purpose. At the time, the shelter was in the beginning phase of ‘beautifying’ the shelter to make it more welcoming and homey for the guests and suggested the youth paint a few of the rooms. HSL students decided to do a community movie night, first, as a fundraiser to raise funds (and awareness of homelessness) for painting supplies. They arranged for a location to show the movie “Because Of Winn Dixie” for free and they collected food donations and brought their own baked goods to sell at the event to raise the funds. Once they began looking for paint supplies they were surprised by the generosity of the community by receiving all painting supplies on donation! HSL presented a check to the shelter from the movie night AND painted some of the rooms at the shelter as well.
